The man behind the world record that still stands today
Hi, I'm Kevin Odonoghue, and on June 9th, 1994, I achieved something that seemed almost impossible at the time: I broke a world record for sit-ups.
It all started early that morning, at 7 o'clock, when I set out to perform 24 hours of continuous sit-ups. The challenge was not just physical; it was about finding the hardest possible feat to push my body to its limits. After researching various options, I settled on sit-ups, inspired by the fact that the previous world record stood at an astonishing 66,000, held by an American.

I chose to attempt this world record in June for one very important reason: in Australia, June is the coldest month. When attempting something as physically demanding as this, the body performs best in cooler temperatures rather than in the heat. I knew that if I could do it in the chill of winter, I would have a better chance of succeeding.
However, despite my careful planning, the challenge proved even tougher than expected. As I reached the final stretch of the 24-hour attempt, I found myself utterly exhausted. My body was screaming for rest, but my mind was focused on one thing: breaking that record.
Halfway through, at around 15 hours, I had already completed 39,000 sit-ups—breaking the Australian record. But I wasn't done yet. I had to keep going. The last few hours were the hardest, with every muscle fiber protesting, but I pushed on. Finally, after 24 grueling hours, I had completed 70,805 sit-ups, shattering the previous world record.
This journey wasn't just about physical endurance—it was about mental toughness, proper nutrition, strategic training, and an unwavering belief that I could do it. Today, I share what I learned to help others break through their own barriers and achieve what they once thought impossible.
